What happens at an osteopathic appointment
Osteopathy is a hands-on treatment approach that seeks to restore your physical health without the need for invasive procedures or the use of medication. Your appointment will typically last between 30-45 minutes which allows for a thorough health assessment and stress-free treatment.
1. Initial Consultation & Examination
Your first appointment focuses on understanding you. You will be asked questions about your symptoms, medical history and lifestyle. This information will constitute a medical record for you and support an accurate diagnosis, screen you for any additional health concerns and inform your treatment going forward. Please note that the information about you or any information you provide during your appointments is kept strictly confidential and kept on file in accordance with the Data Protection Act 1998.
Your first examination involves a full postural and functional assessment of your spine, relevant joints and other musculoskeletal structures to identify restrictions or dysfunctions underlying your symptoms. The problem may be in a different area to where the pain is felt, therefore the body as a whole is observed and examined. As with a visit to a GP or other medical professional, for an examination to be thorough it can be helpful to wear appropriate clothing that can expose the areas of concern. Examination may include tests with special medical equipment to check the health of the cardiovascular, respiratory, digestive or nervous system.
If you, at any point, feel uncomfortable during the examination, please feel free to say so, as it is always possible to take a different approach or make adjustments. You are welcome to bring a chaperone with you, and children should always be accompanied by a parent or guardian with parental consent.
2. Treatment
Treatment is tailored specifically to you or your baby’s needs and comfort and is always subject to your consent. The aim is to reduce restrictions or pain, improve function, calm the nervous system and bring balance to the whole organism, safely and effectively. Techniques will be explained to you throughout the treatment and are always adapted to how the body responds. There are few occasions when a referral to another healthcare service may be deemed necessary before treatment can commence.
3. Advice & Home Support
You’ll receive simple, practical advice and exercises to support your recovery at home. This may include posture guidance or movement tips relevant to your daily life. Everything is designed to be manageable and effective.
4. Review & Progress
Your progress is reviewed regularly and treatment is adjusted as you improve. Some patients feel better quickly, while others benefit from a longer course of care. My focus is on lasting improvement and long-term health.
Remember, your questions can be discussed at any time - before, during or after your treatment. It is important that you feel comfortable and understand your condition.
